Résumé
This study (1) describes the nature, frequency and age of initiation of alcohol and drug use among 161 boys and girls between the ages of nine and twelve residing in eight Quebec Innu communities, and (2) establishes substances user profiles. The results indicate the 71.2% of preadolescents had initiated the use of at least one drug and that 31.2% were at-risk users. The results support a harm reduction approach aimed at avoiding or at least delaying the onset of alcohol and drug use among these youth and underscore the need for intervention tailored to the severity of their consumption.
